Further information
Following the success of the pilot course at Bar Hill Childrens’ Centre, The Parent Partnership Service is putting on 2 sessions which are intended to raise parental confidence and knowledge with regard to communicating with professionals about their child’s special educational needs.
Numerous government enquiries (such as the Lamb report, and the Ofsted Review of SEN,2010) have highlighted the particular difficulties faced by parents of those with SEN in negotiating with professionals about their children’s education. By giving parents some confidence and conciliation skills training, together with more knowledge of the SEN system, these sessions will enable parents to engage more productively in this process.
To achieve this, the first session will focus on techniques which develop assertiveness and confidence which can be applied and benefitted from in any walk of life in addition to discussing special needs and your child’s education; the second session will focus on the “graduated response” – School Action, School Action Plus, some pointers about Statutory Assessment and a look at the County guidelines on provision.
The sessions will be on Tuesday 3rd May and Tuesday 10th May from 9.30am – 11.00am It is important for participants to attend both sessions.
Parents attending this course will also be offered the opportunity to consider joining a Parent Group to meet within Childrens’ Centres on a regular basis benefiting from the strength of support such networking makes available.
If there is a high level of response to this, the Parent Partnership Service will explore ways of putting similar sessions on across the county.
