be active

Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.Evidence shows: Regular physical exercise is associated with a greater sense of well-being and lower rates of depression and anxiety across all age groups. While some evidence suggests that physical activity three to five times a week is needed for symptoms of depression to be reduced - mood has been shown to improve by single bouts of exercise of less than 10 minutes. A small increase in your activity level can enhance your well-being.
Ideas
Try searching the pinpoint 'what's on and where to go search. Either enter a keyword for the type of activity you are interested in e.g. 'Swimming' or go to the drop-down list and select 'Sports and fitness' or 'Sports and leisure'.
Tips
- It doesn't need to be a huge effort. Try building a little activity into your normal day by walking instead of taking the bus or get off the bus a stop earlier.
- If you take up a sport make sure it is one that you really enjoy or do one that involves other people - it will be easier to keep up.
- These five ways to well-being don't need to be pursued on their own. Choose to connect and get active with a friend, or learn a new skill that also increases your level of physical activity.
